The turkey and homemade mash potatoes may be the stars of Thanksgiving dinner, but it’s us runners who steal the spotlight at the annual Turkey Trot! This annual footrace is held on or around the Thanksgiving holiday. This race has become a tradition among many families. Burning a few extra calories makes that extra slice of apple pie come with more whip cream and less guilt. It doesn’t matter if this is your first time or your fiftieth, we’ll dive in on the details you need to know. We’re running out of time, so let’s get started.

What is The Turkey Trot?
The Turkey Trot is an annual running event that varies in distance from town to town. It’s commonly known as a fun run. It is so synonymous with fun that the internet is littered with Thanksgiving memes about the race. But, if you are looking to have a pace that beats your personal best, don’t hesitate to give it your all. Run, Jog, or walk, it’s beneficial to come together as a community and get in some much needed exercise. Participants will have the opportunity to go through some of communities beautiful and historical areas. Your one run away from being a better you. So come join in on the fun this year!

When is it?
It’s that time of year again. Time for the annual Turkey Trot. Most of these Autumn running events are scheduled on or around Thanksgiving. Check your local communities running calendars for specific dates and times in your local area. Let’s celebrate our successes this year, together, with a touch of the outdoors, and dash of fitness.

How do I Sign up?
The race sells out quickly so it’s best not to procrastinate on registering. Again, it could be on or around Thanksgiving day, so be proactive with your running schedule. Once you sign up, make sure you’re ready for the event by following a few important steps: First, get a good night’s sleep the day before. Be sure to eat healthy food that includes carbohydrates and protein. But most importantly, get excited, because this years Turkey Trot is going to be fun for the entire family.

Who Can Participate?
Anyone, from kids on up, can participate in this running event. It’s a great way for the whole family to stay active and enjoy the holiday season together. What’s more, it’s also a perfect opportunity for friends and neighbors to get together and start off the year with not just some fun but healthy fun. Plus, it’s always a nice way to kick off the holiday season! Jogging and running is a popular physical activity. Part of the appeal of running is how gentle it is on your wallet. It also has the added benefit of building stronger bones, burning calories, strengthening muscles, and improving cardiovascular health.

Why should I participate?
You’ll have people around you at this years Turkey Trot who are supportive and encouraging, so don’t worry about not being the fastest runner on the block, just focus on doing your best. Plus, it’s such a rewarding feeling crossing that finish line. You might be surprised how many people’s bodies are unprepared to be running for a mile or more, and that’s okay. Some people think they need a certain level of fitness, but really all you need is a good attitude and the willingness to try something new. In addition, some states or towns, like Mississippi State in Greenville County, support non-for profits like Shriners Hospital For Children. This is a cause we can all get behind and support.

How do I train?
If this is your first time running, start training now and make sure to get in some running exercises at least three times a week. You will want to build up your endurance so that you are ready for the race. Try running for approximately five minutes, then taking a one minute break. Do this several times per training session. You’ll be happy with your how quickly progress. Before you know it, you’ll be ready for the Turkey Trot.

What if I can’t run?
If you are not comfortable running, that’s just fine. You can walk through the course. It will take more time but you will still get a great workout in and enjoy this fun event with your family. We understand everyone’s comfort and fitness level are different. The main focus is that we call come to together as a community at this years Turkey Trot.
